A properly insulated home is comfortable, energy-efficient and less likely to sustain damage from temperature changes. That’s why it’s important to make sure your home has proper insulation. You should have any deficiency addressed by a home insulation professional. In this blog, siding contractor Spicer Bros Construction, Inc. shares the signs that indicate home insulation problems.

Signs That Indicate Home Insulation Problems

Uneven Temperatures

Proper insulation should prevent heat leaks and help maintain even temperatures throughout the house. If you notice drafts or cold spots in certain areas, this means there is insufficient insulation in these areas. Your energy consumption will increase as HVAC output is raised to compensate for these temperature differences.

High Energy Bills

High utility bills are a direct consequence of the said increased energy consumption. If your energy bills tend to spike during summer and winter months, it’s a clear sign that your home has insulation issues. Investing in energy-efficient replacement windows and siding is just one of the many things you may need to do to improve your home’s insulation. The attic and exterior walls, in particular, need to be closely inspected by a home insulation professional.

Ice Dams on the Roof

Ice dams are ice deposits that form on the roof edge. They can also damage the gutters by increasing the weight within the troughs. Ice dams are commonly perceived to be caused by clogged gutters, but this is not always the case.

In fact, a far more common cause of ice dams is insufficient roof insulation. The heat from the attic raises the roof temperature to above freezing, which melts the snow. The water then refreezes at the roof’s edge, which later forms into a dam. The attic can either be insulated using expanding foam under the roof deck or loose blown-in insulation on the attic floor. Either type of insulation is sufficient to prevent ice dams from forming.
